The Laboratory of Turbulence was born in 1973 on the initiative of Director of the Heat and Mass Transfer Institute Academician A.V. Luikov from the sector of the same name. The Laboratory was headed by B.А. Kolovandin from the very beginning to his death in 1998. At the Laboratory, the experimental setups and facilities were created to investigate characteristics of isotropic flows, as well as co-flow and wake flow. At the same time, two directions of theoretical studies were at the stage of development: semi-empirical turbulence models (Kolovandin B.А., Vatutin I.А., Luchko N.N., Bondarchuk V.U., Kovalev I.I., Babenko V.А.) and statistical theory of turbulence (Sosinovich V.А., Sidorovich Т.V., Tsyganov V.А., Babenko V.А.). Much attention was paid to experimental studies of the specific features of evolution of turbulent non-isothermal flows, including in the presence of chemical reaction, and of flows with polymer additives (Puris B.И., Zhdanov V.L., Dmitrenko Yu., Cherepanov P.Ya., Gertsovich V.А., Aerov V.Е.).
