On the basis of a generalized Van der Waals equation
a method is developed to calculate the thermodynamic stability boundary
of a condensed phase. For a number of metals the limits of ideal tensile
strength during their uniform tension at T = 0 K, T = 293 K, and at
the melting temperature are calculated. The character of the temperature
dependence of the strength is considered.
