The concept of the "efficiency" of a plate that is
the ratio of the number of theoretical plates to the number of actual
plates is analyzed. A dependence of the efficiency on the transmissive
capacities of the mass-transfer stages is revealed. Expressions for
analytical calculation of the plate efficiency in the case of linear
approximation and different hypotheses on the structure of flows on
a plate are obtained. It is shown that the efficiency can be larger
than unity.
