He did his undergraduate studies from 1967 to 1973 at the Sankt-Petersburg
(Leningrad) Technical University (Fluid Mechanics Department headed by
Professor Lev G. Loitsiansky), graduating with Dipl. Ing. in Aerophysics.
He started his academic career at the Institute of Theoretical &Applied
Mechanics of the Siberian Branch, USSR Academy of Sciences (Novosibirsk
"Akademgorodok") where under the guidance of Professor Rem I. Soloukhin
he took part in a pioneering investigation of a mixing gasdynamic laser
concept.
Since 1976 he has been working at the Heat & Mass Transfer Institute, Belarus Academy of Science, Minsk, Belarus. Since 1981 N. A. Fomin is Head of the Convective & Wave Processes Laboratory. The main directions of research here are the shock tube study of chemical and physical kinetics, mixing and combustion in supersonic flows, dasdynamic lasers and diagnostics. His recent scientific interest is focused on new optical diagnostics based on speckle photography and speckle tomography. He received the Ph.D.-I ("candidate degree" in the USSR) from the Institute of Physics of the Belarus Academy of Sciences (Minsk), and the Ph.D. -II (" doctoral degree" in the USSR) from the Institute for Problems in Mechanics of the USSR Academy of Sciences (Moscow), both in physics and mathematics, in 1978 and 1986, respectively.
